The Zeh L’Zeh Volunteer app coordinates food rescue between donor stores and volunteer drivers serving families in Rockland County, NY. This policy explains what data the app collects, why, and how we protect it.

Who can use the app

The Zeh L’Zeh Volunteer app is invite-only. Drivers and donor stores are onboarded directly by our office. The app is not open to the general public and does not accept self-registrations.

Information we collect

Account information

  • Name (first, last)
  • Phone number (used as your sign-in username)
  • Email address (optional)
  • Role (driver, donor store, or office staff)
  • For drivers: vehicle type, service neighborhoods, availability
  • For stores: store name, address, contact info, kosher certification,

pickup instructions, hours, optional store logo and entrance photo

Pickup activity

  • Pickups you’ve claimed, started, picked up, or delivered
  • Trip distance and duration (for the four-metric activity tracker:

pickups, miles, stores helped, hours)

Chat messages

  • In-app messages you send to the office, to stores (drivers only), or in

per-pickup chat threads. Stored on our server to deliver them and let you read them later. Not shared with third parties.

Device location (only when you grant permission)

  • Used only while you are actively running a pickup to show the office

driver position on the live board. Not collected when the app is in the background, not sold, not shared with third parties.

Device push tokens

  • A browser- or device-generated push notification token, so we can notify

you about new pickups and chat messages. We do not associate it with anything beyond your user account.

What we do not collect

  • No advertising identifiers (we show no ads).
  • No tracking across other apps or websites.
  • No microphone, camera, or contacts access (you can pick photos from your

gallery for the store profile or pickup photo, but the app never reads contacts or records audio).

How we use your information

  • To deliver the core functionality of the app (showing pickups, routing,

chat, push notifications).

  • To produce the office’s live dispatch board and assignment view.
  • To compute your activity totals (drivers).
  • To send transactional notifications (push, SMS fallback for messages,

email is not used by the app).

We never sell your information. We never share it with advertisers. We share it with our SMS provider (TextMagic) and the browser-native push services (Google FCM and Mozilla Push) only to deliver the notifications you’ve opted into — the providers act as conduits, not data recipients.

Data retention

  • Pickup history is kept for grant reporting and your own activity tracker.
  • Chat threads are kept for operational continuity; the office can clear

threads on request.

  • If you want your account deleted, email office@zehlzeh.org with the

phone number you signed in with. We will remove your profile and chat history within 30 days. Pickup history that does not identify you (e.g., miles totals attributed to an anonymous driver) may be retained for aggregate reporting.

Children

The app is not intended for children under 13. We do not knowingly collect information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided information, contact us and we will remove it.

Security

Data is stored on a private server (staging.zehlzeh.org, US-based) protected by HTTPS in transit and operating-system file permissions at rest. Passwords are hashed with bcrypt. We do not store payment information — the app does not handle payments.

Changes to this policy

We will post material changes here with a new effective date. Continued use after a change indicates acceptance.
